Anxiety Q & A

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a normal human emotion marked by worry, unease, apprehension, or nervousness. Everyone feels anxiety at some point, but anxiety disorders cause this emotion to negatively impact daily life.

What are the different types of anxiety disorders?

The most common types of anxiety disorders are:

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)

Is worry a normal part of your day? Would you say that you’re constantly concerned something will go wrong, or something bad will happen? If you’ve spent more days in the last six months worried than not, you may have GAD.

Some of the most common symptoms of GAD include:

  • A pervasive sense of worry
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Muscle tension
  • Irritability
  • Trouble concentrating

If you have GAD, you may think that the anxiety you feel is a normal part of your life. But Dr. Beltagui can offer relief from the near-constant nervousness you feel.

Phobias

Some people experience anxiety in relation to a specific trigger. Flying, heights, and blood are all common phobias that can produce excessive anxiety.

For people with those types of phobias, managing their anxiety usually means avoiding the trigger itself. But other phobias aren’t so easily avoided. Some people have anxiety related to social situations, being in open spaces, or being separated from a specific person.

Fortunately, Dr. Beltagui helps you overcome your phobia and minimize anxiety’s role in your life.

Panic disorder

Anxiety can also cause short but severe episodes of panic, called panic attacks. These episodes come on suddenly and are often marked by:

  • Inability to breathe normally
  • Heart palpitations
  • Shaking
  • Sweating
  • Feeling like you’ve lost control
  • Feeling like something very bad is about to happen

While the panic attack passes, usually within minutes, you’re left worrying about when the next one will strike. Dr. Beltagui can help you alleviate this worry, so panic attacks — and the fear of them — don’t shape your life.

If you’re living with an anxiety disorder, call Amr Beltagui, MD or request your appointment online today.
